Assessment of qualifications in Colleges of Excellence by Saudi Skills Standards (SSS)

             SSS has designed an assessment strategy that is based on principles of validity, reliability, accessibility, security and fitness for purpose.  The aim is to assess underpinning knowledge, skills, competence and ‘employability’.

            SSS encourages Colleges of Excellence to implement an internal assessment approach that will help support teaching and learning; external assessment by SSS will provide a robust, independent and accurate measure of achievement for all trainees.

External assessment – Foundation Year

Trainees will sit for 2 assessments at the end of the Foundation Year:

  • Cambridge Key English Test (KET) or Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET);
  • Cambridge IT Skills (Basic)

The choice of entering a trainee for KET or PET will depend on the starting point for each individual (the Cambridge English Placement Test will be used to help identify this), and on the progress made by the trainee during the Foundation Year itself.

External assessment – Associate Diploma and Diploma

          SSS has designed an assessment strategy that is based on principles of validity, reliability, accessibility, security and fitness for purpose.  The aim is to assess underpinning knowledge, skills, competence and ‘employability’.

The approach does not rely on a single assessment instrument but comprises 3 components:

  • computer-based tests (CBT) of technical knowledge
  • synoptic competence assessments (Capstone)
  • e-portfolio evidence of skills demonstrated throughout the learning program

          The CBT and Capstone assessments will be taken once at the end of each year in a trainee’s technical program (Years 2 and 3), while unit-based evidence will be stored in the e-portfolio  and assessed/verified throughout the program.  There is a possibility of one re-sit CBT at the end of the main academic year (June or July).

         SSS will support Colleges of Excellence by providing practice CBTs, and through an initial training program for some assessors and internal verifiers.  The Capstone and e-portfolio assessments will be conducted and assessed by college faculty, checked by college internal verifiers, and quality assured by SSS external verifiers.

Grading and certification

Cambridge Certificates for Foundation Year trainees will be issued by Cambridge Assessment –  www.cambridgeenglish.org\ provides more information.

     SSS will provide certification for successful completion of Associate Diploma and Diploma.  In order to pass a program, a trainee must achieve a grade of A-D for each of the 3 assessment components.  A trainee will also receive an overall grade and a GPA score.  The SSS certificate will include a description of the units and the program.

    Additionally, Colleges of Excellence will issue a transcript showing results of the internal assessment taken by a trainee.
